I still don’t get it. What is Yiddish Farm?
We are an organic farm in Goshen, NY that runs Yiddish educational programs. Ultimately, we intend to establish a Yiddish-speaking agricultural community.
Why a Farm?
A farm is a lot more than just the fields and the dirt. Yiddish Farm’s 225 acres provide the context for a home, Beis Medresh, library, office, kitchen, garden, campers, bungalows, and much more. There is something here for everyone. The diversity of spaces, tasks and possibilities, both in the field and beyond, create the context for both the Yiddish language and community to take root.
Does everyone speak Yiddish?
Everyone who lives and works either seasonally or full time on the farm speak Yiddish. Yiddish Farm offers classes for people who already speak Yiddish as well as introductory courses for complete beginners.
Where is Yiddish Farm?
We are located one hour outside of New York City in Goshen, New York. The address is 71 Dzierzek Lane, New Hampton, NY 10958. (New Hampton is the post office, not an actual city)
What role does Jewish tradition play in the programming?
We believe that a traditional Jewish lifestyle is an important part of the Yiddish-immersion experience as well as our future community. In fact we understand Jewish tradition to be part an integral part of our people’s radical heritage. Between Friday night and Saturday, we eat, pray and sing joyously, and we create a peaceful “shabesdik”atmosphere by refraining from using electronics, writing implements and other activities that symbolize work. All of our programs are shomer-shabbos and shomer-kashrus. See our values for more information.
Do you teach Yiddish?
We offer informal opportunities for people to practice speaking Yiddish, as well as a beginner’s summer program for those who do not yet speak the language.
How do I apply to the Yiddish Farm Summer Program?
Where can I buy Yiddish Farm products?
Yiddish Farm produce is used on-farm to feed our guests, students, staff, and residents. We do sell kosher shmura matzo made from our organic wheat as well as kosher heritage turkey. For more information, please contact us.
